Navy Wide Suspender Long Service & Good Conduct Medal Corporal. Royal Marines Awarded to Hy. W. Hills. Corp'l 5th Coy. R.M. 21Yrs. Hills was 13 years old when he joined the Royal Marines as a drummer. it is pure speculation but one notes that the witness signature 9which proves him to be unusual as a literate young man at this time) was a corporal Hills. who might well have been his father. it is also noted that he was enlisted by a sergeant "Henniker" on the 24th February 1845 about whom a related interesting history can be told on the subject of medals. His proposer can properly lay claim to the distinction of heading the list. and thus being the first Royal Marine to receive the newly created R.M. Meritorious service medal. which for Henniker was dated 15th January 1849 on its edge. He was at the time a sergeant (Drum Major) of the 17th Companyat Chatham (Se OMRS Journal Vol 13 No4 (145 )Winter 1974) Henniker also had received the Anchor type LS & GC Medal (January 1841) the pair being shown in a photograph on page 206 of the above mentioned journal. Additionally this pair will be on permanent display to the public in the royal naval museum Portsmouth.in the section on exhibition devoted to telling the history of the introduction of all forms of medals (Gallantry, Campaign, and long service medals) Hills rose to sergeant presumably as Drum Major but only during the last three months of his time in service. Although he was in uniform for over 26 years he was only allowed to count 21 years & 225 days towards his pension and medal. Only once did he go to sea and then only for a year and one week aboard Ocean. in 1846/47. His conduct was exemplary thus gaining him 5 good conduct badgers and a higher pension. His papers make no mention of the award of the LS & GC medal but further research reveals that he was amongst the fortunate few at Chatham to receive a gratuity with his medal. Approval was given on 30th January 1871 for 5 men at Chatham to receive the annual allowance of the LS & GC Medals for Marines ashore. all with gratuity these 5 included a Quarter master, Sergeant and Sergeant (£15.00) two Corporals Hills was one and a private. (all receiving £5.00) 4 oters received the LS & GC Medal but without Gratuity in tha annual allocation at Chatham. Condition of medal EF Comes with full copied research.
