A SURE DEFENCE - THE BOWIE KNIFE BOOK Burton, Kenneth J Australia: K.J. Burton & Co.. Hardcover/pictorial cover/published with printed paper hard case. 1988. A good starter book for Bowie knife collectors. New. Antique Fishing Priests A collection of wood turners’ art in angling across three centuries by Dave Watson.
Each copy of this extended Second Edition is individually signed and numbered, from 001-100.
This book illustrates the elevation of the humble priest, designed to allow the sporting angler to dispatch his catch humanely, from a utility object to an art form by the wood turners’ craft, in a remarkable collection of ninety seven unique priests.
Materials used include boxwood, laburnum, yew wood, rose wood, walnut, ash, ebony, chestnut and lime woods; elephant, walrus and narwhal ivory; bone and whalebone.
Even rarer than turned priests of this quality it seems, are references in print. We note 19th century Piccadilly maker, J Bernard advertised as “J Bernard Fishing Tackle Maker & Turner”.
From the Narwhal ivory and walnut (cover) priest sporting the ‘V (crown) R’ Royal cipher, to the earliest - dated 1718 - and the others from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries - all are the result of refining the collection over four decades. The pictorial catalog of one man's superior collection of antique knives and related products by the famed Sheffield, England maker: Joseph Rodgers & Sons. A stunningly beautiful, landmark, classic production, and a very real collectible in its own right. Classic Bowie knives, Robert Abels - signed copy Classic Bowie knives, Robert Abels
Published by the author, 1967. Soft cover. Fine. 1st Edition. 97 pages.
The classic book in the field of collecting Bowie knives. It is rare to find a collector of this stature who was so ahead of his time. Collectors are fascinated by the niche these knives have carved into American history.
Bowie knives were carried and used by many famous and infamous Americans during a period when this country was undergoing the severe growing pains of a small nation becoming great. American frontiersmen, prospectors, buffalo hunters and soldiers all used these knives as tools of their trade and as a means of protection. Bowie knives were common in the sparsely settled frontier areas, the California gold fields (where their fabulous quality and fine decoration conferred status on the owner), the plains thick with buffalo and the batlefields of the Civil War. Many of these knives are not only treasures for their historical value, but for their great value as pieces of art. Some specimens, obviously the works of silversmiths and jewelers, exhibit beautiful craftsmanship in engraving, tooled leatherwork and metalworking. There is a slight rub a the top of the spine, otherwise the book is a clean, tight near fine copy. The Dust Jacket is only about good with some tears, and edge wear.

David Petty, one of the world\'s leading angling collectors, has had his stunning hoard of cane rods photographed by David Watson, who has compiled the book entitled: ‘One Man One Rod - The Art of Classic Split Cane’.
Rods include examples by Allcocks, Hardy, Ogden Smith, Oliver’s, B. James, Chapman, Milward, Creeke, Gold, Sowerbutts, Antis, Barder and Sealey.

These rods - the Mallard, the Avon and The Dipper - are at least as good as James Avocets”.
David says: “When people look at the book and see these rods they will start to appreciate what jewels they really are”.
The photographs for ‘One Man One Rod’ are by David Watson, best known for the pictures in John Drewett\'s Hardy Brothers, the Masters, the Men, and their Reels. Dave Watson comments: \"I have photographed and portrayed the rods to show a full view of the maker’s logos, name and address panels, as well as the individual sections and features of interest.
Rods are arranged by type of fishing and the index details rod names under Makers, enabling collectors to quickly find rods they seek or already have in their collections.

“angler in rowing boat catches Giant tunny (tuna) 60 miles off Scarborough”.
“the first thing you feel is a violent tug on the line, a tug that quickly builds up... the biggest fish I hooked towed me away out of sight of the fleet......”
“798lb tunny caught in the North Sea by Colonel E.T. Peel, 1932”
John Drewett - Hardy tackle expert, collector and writer (Hardy Bros., The Masters, The Men & their Reels) foreword:
“Mark’s efforts have culminated in a book that is ‘full of texture’. The monochrome photographs are so evocative of an era when men would don blazers and even suits when posing for the trophy picture. The boatman in their flat caps, the boats from which they fished and the yachts which many of the wealthy fishers possessed all combine to convey a world that will never be seen again. The collaboration between Mark Ross & David Watson has produced a hugely important tribute to an element of British angling history that excites so many fishermen and collectors”.
No wonder the excitement & glamour of this new sport attracted the rich & famous. Blending heroic tales of epic sea battles with enormous fish, the special tackle used, & social history this book will fascinate anglers and antique tackle collectors alike.
In leather hard back with dust wrapper and leather slip case, 270 x 210mm, 400 pages, colour printed throughout, 475-plus pictures showing atmospheric 1930s angling, the lords & ladies who went tunny fishing, Hardy and other rare big game fishing reels and tackle. All copies numbered.
